Rams secondary: Shortage is suddenly a surplus?

When the LA Rams entered the 2024 NFL season, the team had already lost young DB Derion Kendrick for the season, and veteran starter Darious Williams was forced to IR to deal with a nagging hamstring injury. Those injuries hit hard at the wrong time, forcing the team to start still-recovering veteran defensive back Tre'Davious White, a former All-Pro free agent who had made a name for himself in the Buffalo Bills secondary.

White simply never worked out, eventually found himself traded to the Baltimore Ravens for next to nothing. At this point, you might conclude that the Rams secondary was running very light in terms of roster depth. And for a short period mid-season, you would be right. But once more, the front office did not fall asleep at the wheel.

The team signed former starting cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to the practice squad. Witherspoon has since earned a spot on the active 53-man Rams roster, and has carved out a starting role for the team once more. Once injured, veteran DB Darious Williams is healthy and starting once more. Their presence allowed the team to sit former starting defensive back Cobie Durant, despite medical clearance following a bruised lung:

Finally, the Rams claimed former Round 1 defensive back Emmanuel Forbes off the Washington Commanders waiver wire. Forbes has yet to see action for the Rams yet, but he is certainly a talented young player to have in reserve in case he is needed.

The team, once sputtering in the early part of 2024 with only 1.5 healthy cornerbacks has suddenly blossomed into a team that boasts four or more game ready cornerbacks on the roster. And that is before getting to the teams talented safeties: Kamren Curl, Quentin Lake, Kamren Kinchens, and Jaylen McCollough.

The LA Rams have grown quite a bit in stature since the Week 2 clash on the road with the Arizona Cardinals. I expect that to make a huge difference in the outcome of the game.

As always, thanks for reading.
