The Los Angeles Rams took the slow boat to China path to re-signing featured RB Kyren Williams to a multi-year deal, but all good things come to those who wait. This was not a must-deal, but it is important to the team to get Williams extended before it becomes a distraction. Williams remained confident and professional throughout contract negotiations.
He never held out of camp. He never took his side of the story to social media. He never showed the least bit distracted. And he was commended by Rams HC Sean McVay frequently for his professionalism
In the end, both sides appear to be winners. Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Williams agreed to a three-year deal worth $33 million, and $23 million is guaranteed. For the Rams, the team gets its top scorer, and arguably its most effective offensive weapon, through 2028.
The Rams sign Kyren Williams to team-friendly deal
The Rams and Kyren Williams had to go slowly because the entire Rams offensive strategy is evolving. Williams was 100 percent of the team's rushing touchdowns and 80 percent of the team's carries. But with a roster that is bursting with running back talent, the mix of carries is all up in the air this season.
As such, the team was able to get a team-friendly deal, while Williams got job security.
Williams now has a contract in place and can focus entirely on helping the Rams' offense gain yards and score points. Of the 37 touchdowns scored by offensive players last season, Williams was directly responsible for 16 of them. With the Rams parting ways with WRs Cooper Kupp and Demarcus Robinson, who contributed 13 touchdowns last season, retaining Williams was a very high priority.
The Rams front office has done its job. Keeping the starting rusher on the roster for the next three seasons is a fantastic deal for the team. Now, the front office can either take a well-deserved rest or pivot to negotiate the next extension.
As always, thanks for reading.
