Seeing is not always believing. The Los Angeles Rams have retained quarterback Stetson Bennett as the team enters their third season with him, and some still want him gone. Others cite limits to his career as though they possess the ability to scry the future through a crystal ball. The Rams have drafted just one quarterback since hiring Head Coach Sean McVay in 2017.
That lone drafted quarterback is none other than Stetson Bennett IV. While he has not been wowing fans consistently yet, he has certainly earned the confidence of the front office and coaching staff.
Fans have been slow to embrace Bennett for various reasons. Still, it's unclear how long even his harshest skeptics can continue to give him the cold shoulder. In two preseason games, Bennett has completed 44 of 64 passes for 512 yards and five touchdowns against two interceptions. Bennett's offense scored 23 points. His opening-drive touchdown came against the Chargers' starters. It's time to accept the fact that the third-year QB is actually pretty darn good.
Stetson Bennett goes ballistic on Chargers' "stingy" defense
While the pattern seems to be very similar, the results are still jaw-dropping. In this one, the Rams found themselves down by a score of 22-17 with 1:25 remaining and the football spotted on the 25-yard line. Bennett completed four of his first five passes before the team called a time-out with the ball on the Chargers' 48-yard line.
Three incompletions later, the Bolts burned their timeout, hoping to stop the Horns and get one last shot to end the game. On fourth-and-10 from the 48-yard line, Bennett hit Brennan Pressley wide open at the eight. From there, the Rams used their final timeout to set up one last play.
And on the very next snap, Bennett delivered again, this time hitting Tru Edwards in the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.

It was the team's second preseason victory. It was also the best performance from Stetson Bennett by far.
At the final whistle, he had completed 28 of 40 passes for 324 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. He leads all preseason passers in passing yards and passing touchdowns.
The bigger story is what he's building. This was his second head-turning performance of the preseason. He certainly appeared to have everything in control in Game 1 as well, with a commanding 31-21 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
Despite some fans and websites lobbying to release the guy, McVay never wavered in his faith in the young quarterback. He's made it clear he's here to stay. He's here to compete.
Critics can no longer scoff at his preseason performance. He proved to be just as effective against the Chargers' starting defense as their backups, and all the while working with backups and players who might not even make the roster.
Do the Rams have questions at the quarterback position? Of course they do. But after two preseason games, it appears that the team has some answers as well. Not only has his performance squelched the need for quarterback help, but Stetson Bennett is making a strong push to be the primary backup, if not future starting quarterback, in the future.
As always, thanks for reading.
