The Los Angeles Rams certainly have plenty of momentum on their defensive front. After a rather lackluster 2024 season, the unit exploded for 16 quarterback sacks in two games in the NFL Playoffs. Now, that same group is pivoting to a new season, and another gauntlet of 17 games before they can compete in the postseason once more.

That is a long road to travel. Why not look for players who have made the journey before?

The team has had many success stories. That is, players who arrived on the roster without ever hearing their names called out during an NFL draft. Though undrafted, they have gone on to earn significant playing time and even a starting role in the NFL. One such player is former Rams defensive end Morgan Fox. While he has settled into a rotational role, he is a sure-handed tackler who learned the NFL as a 3-4 defensive end.

Now, he has been released by the Atlanta Falcons.

Morgan Fox could bring a solid mix of abilties to Rams defense

Despite filling essentially a rotational role throughout his NFL career, several intriguing qualities about Morgan Fox will pique the interest of multiple NFL teams. For openers, he is a sure-handed tackler, missing just seven tackles over the span of his eight seasons. That works out to a 4.2 percent missed tackle rate.

Better still, over 120 NFL games and 34 starts, he has amassed 183 tackles, 27.5 quarterback sacks, three pass deflections, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, 33 tackles for a loss, 51 quarterback hits, and even recorded a safety. When forced into pass coverage, he has allowed just three of five passes to find their targets, good enough for a 60 percent completion rate when targeted.

He stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 275 pounds, big enough to throw his hand in the dirt as a defensive lineman, but agile and fast enough to sit in a two-point stance and play outside linebacker in a pinch. And he already knows many of the team's coaches. He played four seasons with the Rams, and in 2020, he leveraged 403 defensive snaps into 27 tackles, eight tackles for a loss, nine quarterback hits, and 6.0 quarterback sacks.

The team seldom makes a move unless the front office believes that a true need exists. But Fox is the type of player who seems to make plays when needed the most. Some NFL team is going to pick him up. The Rams would be wise to do so. As always, thanks for reading.
