The Los Angeles Rams benefited from the play of veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. in 2021, the year the team won Super Bowl LVI. He played for them for just one half of the season. But perhaps the most intriguing part of his short chapter with the team was the agreed-upon contract he signed.

He didn't demand guaranteed money. He signed for a base salary of $750,00, plus a $500,000 signing bonus. His contract included significant incentivized earnings, based on how well the team performed in postseason competition. As you can see from the chart below, he pulled in an additional $3 million.

  • Wildcard win (or BYE) –          $500,000 (earned)
  • Divisional win –                        $750,000 (earned)
  • NFC Champ win –                     $750,000 (earned)
  • Super Bowl active but loss – $500,000 OR (not earned)
  • Super Bowl Win   –                $1,000,000 (earned)

OBJ opted to take his salary in the cryptocurrency, Bitcoin. His $750,000 base salary was converted in 2021. At the time, speculative calculations were run to determine what could be purchased if the entire $1.25 million had been invested in Bitcoin. Using an estimated conversion rate of $46,475 per Bitcoin, the investment would have secured approximately 22.2068 Bitcoin.

Odell Beckham Jr.'s cryptocurrency gamble has paid off handsomely

If that stake were cashed in today, it would be worth roughly $2.7 million, thanks to the price surging to $121,710.60 per coin as of Thursday. This isn’t an investment recommendation — cryptocurrency remains a speculative asset that’s easy to acquire but not always as simple to convert into cash. Still, the 32-year-old was comfortable taking that gamble.

And per the latest NFL rumors from NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, he is drawing interest in playing in the NFL once more:

Don't expect the Rams to reunite with OBJ in 2025. The team has since built an offense around WR Davante Adams and Puka Nacua. And many young receivers with promising talent want to make the team this year. LA is not in the mix to sign a veteran receiver. Not at this point in time.

From Odell Beckham Jr.’s brief stint with the team, two things stand out: he played a pivotal role in helping them navigate the 2021 season en route to winning Super Bowl LVI, and you should never bet against him. As always, thanks for reading.
