The 2025 Los Angeles Rams training camp can be described as the first opportunity for the team to familiarize itself with the strengths, attributes, and limits of a bevy of new players. At the same time, it's a chance to reintroduce familiar faces who have honed their craft and have plenty of new qualities to showcase.
It's easier for fans to be drawn to new player additions. They are mysterious. They are the unknown variables. And for a team that fell short last season, they seem to be the players who will carry the team over the top in this new season.
But it's often the rise, progress, and development of veterans who buoy the team. Players never plateau on their rookie contracts, especially as the familiarity of the NFL adds to their understanding of their roles, and they focus their off-season workouts to reinforce the qualities needed to succeed. One such player who needs to be revisited is tight end Davis Allen.
Davis Allen matches Puka Nacua's circus catch with one of his own
Rams veteran TE Davis Allen is fighting for limited roster spots. After two seasons in the NFL, he's been disappointed in the amount of work that has come his way. In two seasons, he has played 501 offensive snaps, been targeted 24 times, caught 16 passes for 134 yards, and scored one touchdown. In postseason competition, he's hauled in three of four passes for 34 yards and a touchdown.
Entering his third NFL season, he has had to face additional competition. In 2023, he competed against newly arrived veteran Hunter Long. In 2024, the Rams signed veteran Colby Parkinson. And in 2025, the team drafted Terrance Ferguson.
Through it all, Allen has stuck around on the Rams roster because he is a solid blocking tight end. Until now, that has been enough. They are seeking more offensive production out of the tight end room.
The pads are one. While the speed and physicality in camp are nowhere close to what they will be in a regular-season football game, the level of play is ramping up. And with faster and more physical practices, some players seem to be more at home. Allen seems more comfortable catching footballs in pads.
Just like this one-handed circus catch.

While he's no Puka Nacua, it was still an impressive grab. He's not known for his pass-catching ability. But on an offense that needs to do better, his demonstration that he can catch the football is welcome news.
With the Rams having no Matthew Stafford at training camp, the team has relied heavily on Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett to pilot the offense. Both quarterbacks have had significant success throwing to tight ends in the past. And Allen is one of the offensive weapons who is benefiting from the rearranged training camp format.
The Rams depth chart is fiercely competitive this year. But even as competition is heating up, don't rule out Davis Allen just yet. The team needs tight ends to step up this year. It appears that Allen has already done so.
As always, thanks for reading.
