Matthew Stafford is hammering final nail in the coffin of tired Rams debate

We're done here, if it wasn't settled already.

4,351 yards. 11 touchdowns. 305 completions. That is all that stands between Matthew Stafford and sole possession of the Los Angeles Rams' all-time passing records, currently led by Jim Everett (yards), Roman Gabriel (TDs), and Marc Bulger (completions). After five seasons in L.A., it's fair to compare Stafford and the last man in his place, former No. 1 overall draft pick Jared Goff.

The results are definitive enough to hammer the final nail in the coffin of controversy. Trading for Stafford was the right move.

There is no flip side to this record. Even as Goff leads a star-studded roster in Detroit, equipped with a complete stable of weapons Stafford never had, the latter's impact on the Lions franchise, the most relevant thing about them since Barry Sanders, remains out of reach for Goff and any foreseeable quarterback in Motor City's future.

If Goff sticks around long enough and remains in an extended prime, he might have a chance to break his predecessor's franchise records. For now, that looks like a relative long shot. Now that each quarterback has completed five Rams seasons, the debate is objectively over, if it wasn't already.

Advantage: Matthew Stafford.

Stafford's 2026 season could shatter Rams record books

Back in 2021, the Rams sent Goff and a small arsenal of draft picks to Detroit in exchange for Stafford. The debate raged for years as to whether the move was justified, though a comfortable majority settled on the fact Stafford led the Rams to victory in Super Bowl LVI, in his first season with the team.

Stafford winning an MVP to cap Horns career thus far has hammered in the final nail.

Of course, Detroit has also enjoyed success. Coupled with an infusion of talent from those Rams draft picks (shown above as the players those picks became), Goff has helped vault the Lions back into the playoff picture after years of irrelevance.

That doesn't move the verdict an inch. Imagine what Stafford could have done with the team's present plethora of stars around him? He has already proved what he can do with a little help and a good head coach like Sean McVay. Lions fans, send word when you get that Lombardi.

At the ripe age of 38, Stafford needs one more season to shatter Rams passing records. All it will take is 4,351 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 305 completions. That's just a drop in the bucket for L.A.'s girl-dad quarterback, the one about to lay indisputable claim to his status, already solidified with a Super Bowl and MVP, as the best in franchise history.

As always, thanks for reading.
