Multiple NFL experts give this reason to explain why the LA Rams are red-hot
By Bret Stuter
There are always ways to do a better job, and I'm quite certain that LA Rams Head Coach Sean McVay would be the first to admit that. After the 2022 NFL season, McVay had to step away from football for a time and reconnect with family and close friends. After winning Super Bowl LVI, McVay found himself powerless to stop his team from falling to 5-12.
McVay had to discover what lie at the core of his essence: Did he love football for the game itself? Or was he merely addicted to the thrill of winning that football provided? As it turns out, he learned that he simply loves the game. As a result, he has sought players who hold the same passion for the game itself.
Has it worked? Since tumbling to 5-12, the Rams have rebounded nicely. The team ended 2023 with a record of 10-7 after starting the season at 3-6. And this season, the team has improved to 8-6, after starting the season at 1-4.
After going 5-12, the Rams are roaring back to life with an accumulated record of 18-13. Keep in mind that the team is doing all of this without All-Pros ILB Bobby Wagner, DB Jalen Ramsey, and after All-Pro DT Aaron Donald's retirement after the 2023 NFL season.
This team just defeated the Buffalo Bills, a team that many expect to challenge the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game. As a result, Good Morning Football host Peter Schrager lauded Coach McVay with his Coach of the Week honors.
But he was not alone in recognizing Coach McVay's proficiency of late.
Even McVay's former head coach shows up to congratulate him
Coach McVay was the offensive coordinator with the Washington Football team under HC Jay Gruden. Minnesota Vikings HC Kevin O'Connell was the quarterback coach on staff as well. In Week 14, the Rams and Vikings both broke the 40+ point barrier, warranting a shout out from their former head coach on social media.
If you revisit the coaching staff that was gathered for the Washington Football team under HC Mike Shanahan, it reads like a 'Who's who?' of future NFL head coaches. But those coaches stepped up in their own right, each taking charge and command of their respective teams.
Perhaps no team has benefitted more from that coaching staff than the LA Rams. Not only did the team benefit from Coach McVay, but he has allied himself with various other coaches by adding them to his own staff. As coaches continue to be poached from his staff, he adds the best and brightest coaches to expand their collective experiences and thought processes.
And then there is the unnamed GM chiming in
It's easy to coach when everything is going well. But the real trick is to coach the offense when nothing seems to be going right. It may have been tougher for Coach McVay to scratch and claw for 12 points, than to explode for 44 points. When everything is working, everything works. But when nothing is working, it's vital to stay balanced and focused. And that effort, blending runs and passes, makes other NFL executives and coaches sit up and take notice:
The Rams are not assured of a playoff berth yet. The team is not even guaranteed to end 2024 with a winning record. But the Rams are 7-2 since their Week 6 BYE, and if you want to give credit where credit is due, you have to place the Rams winning streak at the feet of HC Sean McVay.
He doesn't get it right everytime. But he does learn along the way. Right now, he has his team winning games as the underdog. If the Rams make the 2025 NFL Playoffs, they will cause headaches to their opponents.
As always, thanks for reading.
