The Los Angeles Rams stunned fans and the rest of the NFL when they opted to spend their first-round pick on Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. This isn't to say that Simpson didn't deserve to be a first-round pick, but rather that the Rams taking him was a shock.

Considering the Rams were oh-so-close to making it to the Super Bowl, one might have thought they'd have turned their attention to addressing their weaknesses from a season ago. But, alas, they opted to draft for the future with this pick, as Simpson hopefully won't be taking any meaningful snaps in 2026.

Jordan Reid and the NFL Nation team at ESPN went through every rookie quarterback and broke down what to expect from each of them during their first year in the league. One blurb from Simpson's section that caught Rams fans' attention was discussing where the former Crimson Tide signal-caller could lead the league in five years. Reid wrote:

"Completion percentage. Simpson is a highly accurate passer who completed 64.5% of his passes last season and can be effective in multiple schemes. Simpson is able to fit passes into tight windows in all areas of the field, as his ball placement and decision-making ability are elements that can carry over to the NFL."

Ty Simpson predicted to lead the league in completion percentage down the road

Ty Simpson will have time to grow his game, and that's precisely why the Rams took him when they did. Matthew Stafford is returning for an 18th NFL season, and that gives Simpson one of the best mentors he could ask for to learn from during his rookie year.

With Los Angeles taking the same approach that Kansas City did with Patrick Mahomes and Alex Smith, the hope is that Simpson can become a great NFL quarterback. If he's the league-leader in completion percentage, that'd mean he had a pretty darn good year.

The Ty Simpson experiment will force Rams fans to be patient. If they approach this the right way, there's no reason Simpson can't follow Reid's prediction here. This was a pick for the future, and hopefully, it pans out for all involved.
