As the start to the 2026 NFL season inches ever closer, Los Angeles Rams backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo remains a wild card in the free agency market. Despite NFL rumors that Arizona Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur's earnest interest in adding Jimmy G, they pivoted to sign quarterback Gardner Minshew.
That seems to indicate that general manager Les Snead is the front-runner for LA's respected backup QB. In a utopian world, it could even mean that Snead is the only bidder for Garoppolo's services. Still not convinced?
One of the New York Jets podcasts by Connor Hughes is on the trail. He is somewhat versed in the NFL. You see, he covers the Jets, but his travels have intersected with the outcome of many NFL quarterbacks. And he claims that it's unlikely that Jimmy Garoppolo leaves Los Angeles.
There’s another team another than the #Jets to watch for Geno Smith .. https://t.co/qVn7hWRo3J

While the podcast is a full hour (and who has that much time to kill?), the video holds a treasure trove of information about where quarterbacks end up. The most intriguing segment for Rams fans is the discussion about Jimmy Garoppolo at the 36:40 mark. Both co-hosts emphasize that LA wants him back, and he is very interested in sticking around. They expect Garoppolo to be back.
Les Snead has emphasized that he wants to have all options on the table in the NFL draft. Garoppolo negates the team's need to draft a quarterback early. This assertion checks all the boxes.
Mike LaFleur could pry Jimmy Garoppolo from the Rams and he didn't
If you wanted the LA Rams to change things up in the quarterback room, you may be out of luck. After all, what were the chances that the team would embrace wholesale changes as soon as Matthew Stafford announced that he would be back?
Highly unlikely.
None of this should shock fans. An All-In scenario was obvious long before Stafford announced his return, and Snead has adhered to that script once more. One of the key points of that All-In scenario seems very prophetic. Here is what that article asserted long before free agency hit:
"While Los Angeles is frequently mocked in drafting a project quarterback, the return of Stafford could force the front office to shelve those plans. Doesn't that defy the logic of mentoring a rookie quarterback?
Perhaps. But it's almost a done deal that this team will have little interest in backing up Stafford with an untested rookie. And the need for a veteran backup all but eliminates the limited roster slots to invest in a rookie quarterback in 2026.
Snead may simply run it back, extending veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for one more season. Of course, if the team hopes to have a successor to Stafford on the roster for 2026, now would be the last chance to do so."
Of course, nothing is a certainty. But evidence continues to mount that LA will be content with running it back with the same quarterback room in 2026. Of course, Snead must realize that he has no quarterbacks under contract for 2027, but one challenge at a time.
Perhaps that is solved with a multi-year deal with Jimmy Garoppolo. That could take some time to navigate, and that would explain the delay in any news about his future.
As always, thanks for reading.
