The Los Angeles Rams and NFL blockbuster trades go together like peanut butter and jelly combine for a tasty and nutritious sandwich. While you may have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches quite often, the NFL does not have the luxury of going to the pantry and whipping up another Rams blockbuster trade. So, when NFL rumors abound and they seem to hold some basis in fact, the possibility excites all NFL fans.
Right now, NFL rumors are all abuzz over the likelihood of the Rams trading with the Miami Dolphins over the likelihood of getting Pro Bowler DB Jalen Ramsey back on the Rams roster. Yes, the same Rams roster that traded Jalen Ramsey to the Dolphins just two years ago.
In that trade, the Rams traded Ramsey to the Dolphins. In return, the Rams received TE Hunter Long and a Round 3 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, used to select Tennessee OLB Byron Young. And now, the two teams are actively discussing how to go about undoing that trade.
"I do still expect Jalen Ramsey to be traded..

Him and Sean McVay are still good friends and that would make sense as a landing spot" ~ @RapSheet #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/LqQpQis2g8
Does it really make sense? Some fans love the idea, and are all for it. Other fans hate the idea, and are just as passionately opposed to it. But NFL trades are a bit like the weather. Like it or not, it's going to happen. At least, that is the growing sentiment among NFL Insiders. They have reason to up the likelihood, as the often-evasive GM Les Snead and HC Sean McVay have openly admitted to pursuing negotiations to return Ramsey to the Rams.
Per NFL.com Senior News Writer Kevin Patra, Rams HC Sean McVay confirms that the Rams are in ongoing talks with the Miami Dolphins over trading veteran defensive back Jalen Ramsey back to the Rams. Perhaps the most informative extract from McVay's comments on the topic is this:
"And so those conversations are ongoing, as I am sure they are with multiple teams. And we will see, but we're never going to shy away from opportunities to increase the competitiveness of our roster or add great players as long as it fits within the framework of everything that an acquisition like that would entail."Rams HC Sean McVay
When the head coach considers a trade as resulting in 'increasing the competitiveness of the roster,' then you can be sure that the Rams are in active negotiations. But note the 'as long as it fits' warning label. The Rams clearly have preset conditions for a successful trade for Jalen Ramsey, and those conditions could include the Dolphins splitting Ramsey's tremendous financial burden. For that to happen, the trade will need to happen on or after a June 1 designation.
Coach McVay and Jalen Ramsey continue to be friends, even after Ramsey was traded to the Dolphins. That friendship is more than hot dogs and burgers on a backyard barbecue. They developed a rapport when they competed for the Rams, culminating in winning Super Bowl LVI. So, why would the Rams want Ramsey back?
Jalen Ramsey is a big physical defensive back who is still an upgrade over the options currently available on the Rams roster. And the Rams' secondary has changed dramatically since Ramsey was last on the Rams team. The safeties are far more effective at pass coverage, which gives Jalen Ramsey more help over the top than he enjoyed in his last stint with the team.
Some Rams fans love the idea of getting Jalen Ramsey back. Some Rams fans hate the idea of getting Jalen Ramsey back. As for me? I am convinced that GM Les Snead has already determined what Ramsey is worth to the team, and will negotiate to get him at that price point, or he will simply walk away.
The wheels are in motion. Let's see how it all turns out. And as always, thanks for reading.
