Whether some lack appreciation or respect for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett is not the point. What is relevant for Rams fans right now is that Bennett may well be the next guy up on LA's quarterback depth chart this season, putting him directly behind starter Matthew Stafford. And yet, there are those who still argue for outright releasing him.
Some see untested rookie Ty Simpson already supplanting Bennett. Others argue that the Rams should sign a veteran for insurance, as if Bennett has already let the team down. And still others see Bennett as one-and-done even if he does win the backup job in 2026, with little chance of an extension at year's end.
One aspect of Rams training camp that nobody is discussing is the level of interest in Bennett other teams would likely have were he to become available by failing to make the 53-man roster. Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur, the former Rams offensive coordinator, would scoop up Bennett in a heartbeat.
The Vikings could as well if the loser of the competition between JJ McCarthy and Kyler Murray becomes a bitter trade candidate. Still, many fans might wonder why Bennett, who has yet to play an official snap, would intrigue other teams.
Multiple teams could have reason to keep tabs on Stetson Bennett
For the typical team, spending a first-round pick on a rookie, particularly a quarterback, pushes that prospect to the top of the depth chart. But Simpson does not fit the mold. Although he has elite instincts, he has little experience or battle-tested resolve, even from his college career. Plus, there's this guy named Stafford already penciled in as the starter.
LA has the reigning MVP and a complex offense that Simpson will need time to learn. Bennett has earned the right to be favored as a backup.
Bennett has learned the Rams' entire playbook and is relatively inexpensive. If he suddenly becomes available, as some foretell, he would be a valuable depth addition to almost any quarterback room.
Bennett is, like Simpson, untested in real-game reps, but he has spent the past three seasons getting the best quarterback coaching in the NFL. He was outstanding in two 2025 preseason games. He has shown himself ready for the role of QB2.
One thing worth noting, of course, is that Bennett has yet to spend much time with starters. Rather, as during last preseason, he has developed a connection with young receivers like Xavier Smith, Jordan Whittington, and Konata Mumpfield.
Simpson may be the latest and greatest quarterback on the Rams' roster. But Bennett has put in his dues and should be considered the next man up until proven otherwise. You can bet that more than a few opposing GMs will closely monitor developments during Rams training camp to see how the competition plays out.
As always, thanks for reading.
