When it rains, it pours. So it seems to be the case for a growing list of bumps and bruises with the 9-2 Los Angeles Rams as they make final preparations for Week 13's collision with the 6-6 Carolina Panthers. The team, still reeling from a physically draining victory over the Seattle Seahawks, added several more names to the injury report this week.
The team had cautioned fans that star outside linebacker Byron Young would be limited in practice this week with a knee injury. But nose tackle Poona Ford and safety Kam Kinchens also appeared on the final injury report. The team shared an update, so let's unpack the concerning news. Neither Kinchens (shoulder) nor Ford (calf) was able to put in a full practice this week.
They join backup offensive tackle David Quessenberry in questionable status for Week 13 against the Panthers. Quessenbery is one of the primary backups to Warren McClendon Jr., who is himself starting for injured veteran right tackle Rob Havenstein.
What news of Tutu Atwell, Ahkello Witherspoon, and Byron Young?
If you need positive news, it appears at though the team was able to nurse Byron Young back to health in time for a Week 13 appearance. And Tutu Atwell and Ahkello Witherspoon both had a full week of practice, prompting many to anticipate their return from injured reserve.
Meanwhile, the Panthers' injury report is a bit more concerning. Not only must they face the Rams without safety Tre'Von Moehrig, who is suspended for one game, but they have also ruled out five other players, including:
- LB Claudin Cherelus - concussion
- LB Christian Rozeboom - hip, hamstring
- DB Jaycee Horn - concussion
- C Cade Mays - Ankle
- G Chandler Zavala - Calf
All five players, except Cherelus, are starters, and the loss of two interior offensive linemen and two defensive backs with Los Angeles in town does not bode well. It could very well be the absence of Panthers starters that could prompt the Rams to sit NT Poona Ford in Week 13, and expand rotational roles for DT Tyler Davis and rookie NT Ty Hamilton.
There will be a chess match within a chess match in Week 13, if it's just about who is and isn't active for the game. And so, we await the final verdict.
As always, thanks for reading.
