Let's add a veteran passer to the Rams roster

TRADE: LA Rams trade the 216th overall pick to the New York Giants for backup quarterback Tommy DeVito. While the LA Rams have plenty of quarterback prospects on the roster by the time the New York Giants propose a trade, the LA Rams have to listen intently to this offer. While the Giants did not spend any draft picks to sign Tommy DeVito after the 2023 NFL Draft, he did start six games for the Giants and led them to a record of 3-3. He even earned honors as NFL Offensive Player of the Week.

Acquiring a player of that caliber for a sixth-round pick is something I believe that the Rams front office would jump at. For a full breakdown of Tommy Devito, check out this feature by Big Blue View. The New York Giants need a prospect who can ultimately earn their franchise QB role. The LA Rams roster has the luxury of having some time before a replacement for Stafford is needed.

Round 6: Part III

With the 217th overall pick, the LA Rams select Edge J.J. Weaver, Kentucky. Not only does adding Weaver increase the competition for rushing the quarterback, and thicken the depth at the position for a thin Rams roster, but he also brings the ability to make an immediate impact for the LA Rams on special teams in punt and kickoff coverage. And the Rams have to keep one eye on upgrading special teams play this season.

The Rams have been astonishingly effective on Day 3 of the NFL Draft, a trend that could continue in 2024 with this selection. Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 244 pounds, Weaver has that long and lanky pass rush build of former LA Rams edge rusher Justin Hollins. And much like Hollins, Weaver projects as an NFL linebacker who could slide into any LB role in the Rams base 3-4.

It's that versatility that seals it for the Rams. The Rams love to have guys who can plug and play at multiple positions, and J.J. Weaver can certainly deliver that. And his size, strength, and speed simply scream special teams coverage unit, an area of dire need for the LA Rams in 2024.

So, let's recap the LA Rams selections in this 2024 Rams mock draft. They are:

  • Round 1 - DB Nate Wiggins
  • Round 2 - WR Xavier Worthy
  • Round 4 - DL McKinley Jackson
  • Round 4 - DB Jaden Hicks
  • Round 5 - OLB Cedtric Johnson
  • Round 5 - QB Joe Milton III
  • Round 6 - ILB Ben Bywater
  • Round 6 - OT Roger Rosengarten
  • Round 6 - DB Sheridan Jones
  • Round 6 - ILB/OLB J.J. Weaver

But the Rams traded twice in this draft as well, and as a result, picked up the following veterans:

  1. Defensive back Daryl Worley
  2. Quarterback Tommy DeVito

Ten rookies plus two low-cost veterans at positions of need who will elevate the level of competition for the 2024 LA Rams training camp. While not perfect, it's a solid start for the first Rams mock draft of 2024. Do you like any of the rookies selected in this draft?
