II: An out-of-favor receiver

The LA Rams were a bit shocked when the lost the bidding war to extend Von Miller to the Buffalo Bills. As a result, the team was a bit perplexed. After all, they created a war chest to spend on Miller by restructuring contracts and found themself flush with cash to make another Super Bowl run in 2022, but with no clear player to sign.

And then, the LA Rams signed WR Allen Robinson for a lot of money. Then, the bottom fell out of their 2022 NFL season.

While the two events are not necessarily related, the problems caused by overspending for Robinson, and the need to purge contributors just to have enough money to sign offensive linemen to replace injured players, certainly derailed the team's fortunes in 2022. After limping across the finish line of the 2022 NFL season, the front office bit the bullet, shedding the roster of highly-compensated players with the intention of resetting their cap space in 2023.

Allen Robinson was one such player, who was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, his is being released outright:

Since his very impressive performance in the Chicago Bears offense in 2020, Robinson's performance plummeted in 2021, and continues to erode each successive year. While he can still catch the football, he fails to be targeted in offenses. Has he lost a step? Is he simply not creating sufficient separation? Is he just a player whose demeanor rubs quarterbacks the wrong way?

I do not have the answer. But Allen Robinson is a free agent once more. This time, his reputation is such that he may be waiting for the phone to ring for some time.
