3 ways Round II of RB Sony Michel optimizes Rams offense
By Bret Stuter
I: He's back, and better than ever
I did not understand why the LA Rams did nothing to retain RB Sony Michel after the 2021 NFL season. After all, contributors to the team are not as common as many believe. Is it the devaluation of the running back position that got the Rams swept up in overlooking Michel as a piece to the puzzle for 2022? I don't have the answer.
But I do know that Sony Michel is saying everything that compels me to cheer for him. Here is a Super Bowl ring bearer, committing to humility to do whatever the Rams need him to do:
"It means that they think I can potentially be another piece of the puzzle on this team. For me, I just gotta maximize it. I just gotta put my head down and work, earn everything. Nothing is gonna be given. So that is kind of the mindset."
- Per Sony Michel re returning to Rams
In the end, Sony Michel may simply be a guy who helps the LA Rams coaches align all of the young running backs to the cadence, quality, and focus necessary to get maximum benefit from training camp this year.
But I, for one, hope that there is more to it than that. RB Sony Michel was an integral contributor to the LA Rams Super Bowl LVI winning season. I hope that he makes the roster this year, not just for Auld Lang Syne. Ultimately, I think Michel has that NFL championship quality that I would love to keep on the Rams roster.
