Disaster 3: Pick this wide receiver on Day 2

No matter how many times I've run online 2023 NFL Draft simulators, if I try to emulate the LA Rams tendency and choose a wide receiver on Day 2, disaster follows. Either the draft board shuts down on positions that are more urgent, like safety or interior offensive line, or the draft board suddenly starts loading up with wide receivers at each selection for the LA Rams.

The LA Rams offense will open the 2023 NFL season with plenty of firepower. There is Cooper Kupp, Allen Robinson (for now), Van Jefferson, Tutu Atwell, Ben Skowronek, and more. So if the Rams use one of the valued Day 2 picks on a wide receiver, how much playing time can the team realisitcally project for that player in their rookie season? If the player leapfrogs over Atwell on the depth chart, than the Rams threw a valuable pick after a draft pick that is now almost worthless to the team.

Rams met with this small speedy WR prospect

The LA Rams have had at least one pre-draft meeting with Houston WR Tank Dell. Dell is a solid receiver in the right offense. He stands 5-foot-8 and weighs 165 pounds. If he sounds like a carbon copy of the Rams' current wide receiver Tutu Atwell, he is. Right now, if an NFL team wishes to call out Tank Dell's name in the 2023 NFL Draft, it will likely need to plan to do so no later than the second round. That poses a lot of problems for the LA Rams roster in 2023.

The Rams have starters in place at the wide receiver position. And unless the team parts ways with WR Allen Robinson, which appears less likely with each passing day, the Rams will boast Cooper Kupp, Allen Robinson, Van Jefferson, Ben Skowronek, and Tutu Atwell with more experience in the Rams offense and likely ahead of him or any receiver on the depth chart. A pick at another position, like say offensive lineman, defensive back, or even edge rusher, could yield a Day 1 starter.

The LA Rams have dallied far too often with offensive niche weapons, and the results so far have not been satisfactory. I believe that Tank Dell offers an NFL team plenty of offensive opportunities. But on the Rams' offense, he will just be one more player packed with football potental that will end up in mothballs.
