A wide receiver?

That's right. If the LA Rams invest heavily into their receiver room, which I believe will be the case, then the Rams will take a hard and discerning look at returning players who may no longer be a fit for what this team wants to do in 2023. Is it Tutu Atwell? Not at this point. But the team may be rethinking the role, and the future, of veteran FA wide receiver Austin Trammell.

The LA Rams had done this once before. After the LA Rams red-shirted undrafted wide receiver Trishton Jackson on the 53-man roster for the 2020 NFL season, the belief was that he would find a way to contribute for the team the following year. Instead, the LA Rams front office buried him on the Rams depth chart by drafting WR Tutu Atwell in Round 2, TE/WR Jacob Harris in Round 4, and WR Ben Skowronek in Round 6.

When it came time to make final roster cuts, Trishton Jackson was not among the players who remained on the final 53-man roster for 2021. It's logical that the Rams intended to sign him to the team's practice squad, but Jackson opted to sign with the Minnesota Vikings practice squad instead.

It's deja vu all over again

I see a lot of parallel from that situation to the one that is developing on the Rams roster this year. The trade of veteran WR Allen Robinson was nothing more than a salary dump to clear him off the books for the 2024 NFL season. But the open roster spot that his trade has created gives the LA Rams all the more reason to shop for rookie wide receivers to redshirt on the Rams roster.

That means that the LA Rams draft at least one wide receiver in the 2023 NFL Draft. But aren't wide receivers a bit like Lay's potato chips where the Rams are concerned? Once the team has a taste of a rookie receiver. the team struggles to stop at just one. While the Rams receiver room is not currently boasting a clear WR2 at the moment, that will not stop the Rams from pruning the position to get down to the initial 53-man roster.

To be very honest, I do not believe that undrafted WR Lance McCutcheon's roster spot is entirely safe for the 2023 NFL season either.
