4 teams that could steal Rams’ top Day 2 draft targets
By Bret Stuter
The 2024 NFL Draft appears at first glance to be the type of draft that has a little bit of everything for everybody. It's the epitome of NFL Etsy, an open marketplace that is both speculative and fiercely competitive. If the dominoes fall the right way, the LA Rams could emerge with as many as five starters and a roster teaming with talent. But if the board does not fall the right way, well the thrill of new faces will be tainted by the perceived disappointment of the front office missing out on their primary options, and settling for what prospects remained on the draft board as the team selected.
The current list of draft needs for the Rams has changed significantly since the 2024 NFL Free Agency market. The Rams seem to have addressed their primary needs on offense, and have enough functional depth on the roster to start the 2024 NFL season as is. But I would say that as of the teams draft needs, the Rams could/should target the following positions on each draft day:
- Day 1 - Edge, DL, WR, DB, OT, QB
- Day 2 - Edge, DL, DB, WR, OL, QB, LB
- Day 3 - Edge, DL, DB, WR, OL, QB, TE, RB, LB, K
Of course, if the team selects from one of the position groups listed on a previous day, that position can be removed from the shopping list of the later days and rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft. We have plenty of options and directions to go throughout the draft, but the success of a draft is not just in identifying the right players who fit the LA Rams culture and roster, but in the planning and choreography of when to address the team needs in any given round.
While the Rams may not has seeded the front office staff of any NFL teams, they certainly were cannibalized to create the new coaching staff of the Atlanta Falcons. In fact, there are many NFL teams that owe the LA Rams credit for their head coach or key coordinators as they approach the 2024 NFL Draft.
It's the familiarity with the LA Rams front office and coaching staff by so many key decision-makers throughout the NFL that makes the Rams' route through any draft process so precarious. Let's identify and discuss those NFL teams that by the benefit of their position in the 2024 NFL Draft and their presumed positional needs could prove to be rogues who could steal the Rams' top Day 2 draft targets.
To identify the NFL team's draft needs, we used NFL.com's draft analyst Chad Reuter's Top 5 Needs as our source. That article was created on February 11, 2024, so many of the free agency changes are not reflected.
