49ers fans burning jerseys and other fun reactions to Rams win in Week 3
By Bret Stuter
Inevitably, the LA Rams hosting the San Francisco 49ersis an annual occasion for thousands of 49ers fans to migrate to SoFi Stadium, as though it's a religious pilgrimage. It's inevitable and unavoidable. But most of all, it's quite disappointing to see the Rams first home game populated by what some estimates claim were 70 percent fans of the visiting team.
It's particularly heartbreaking know that the Rams won Super Bowl LVI playing in SoFi Stadium. The 49ers, well, they haven't won anything more important than a regular season game or two at SoFi. And yet, they keep coming. And they continue to hope for big things from their team. In the recent past, the Rams did little to stop that annual migration from happening.
The last time the Rams defeated the 49ers in SoFi Stadium was the NFC Championship Game after the 2021 NFL season. But perhaps the tide is turning in the Rams favor once more.
The Rams have won two consecutive games against the 49ers, a mini-winning streak that we hope will grow to be much longer. This victory was particularly happy because in the days leading up to the clash, 49ers fans were bursting with confidence. Too much confidence, it seemed then and now. So sitting back and watching how they handle this shocking defeat is rather entertaining.
Bad luck Aiyuk
After holding out throughout training camp and preseason to get his fair market value extension, 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk finally got paid handsomely. But that huge payday that 49ers celebrated as a sweet deal has turned sour overnight. In the game, Aiyuk caught just five of 10 for 48 yards. And that was hardly what his fans expected.
For the three games this season, Aiyuk has caught 11 of 20 passes for 119 yards and no touchdowns. That's not very much for a guy who just signed a four-year $120 million contract extension.
And 49ers fans are not happy.
Brandon Aiyuk jerseys are burning today. And it's fun to watch. You know if he has a good game, those same fans will rush back and buy new jerseys to replace their incinerated predecessors.
Tears for Fears
The best way to stop a fanbase from boasting, trolling, or simply being cocky is to beat their team. And that is exactly what the Rams did in Week 3. Despite spotting the 49ers a 14-point lead twice in the game, the Rams roared back to life in the second half, outscoring the visitors by a margin of 20 to 10.
The emotional reactions of 49ers fans who had traveled to celebrate a win, only to lose the game in the final second, were dramatically over the top. Tears flowed freely from the fans in red jerseys in Week 3:
While I'm typically quite empathetic, everyone knows that had the 49ers won, those same fans would have been terribly loud and boastful. Hey, everyone needs a little humility in life to stay grounded. 49ers fans had a huge helping of humble pie, SoFi style.
The departing of the Red Sea at SoFi
Hey, fans who travel to support their football team know that there is a risk that the final score won't go their way. And so, it's a roll of the dice as to whether to make such a long trip with the risk of returning a great distance after a loss.
But the success of the San Francisco 49ers against the LA Rams in the regular season appears to have given 49ers fans a perception that wins will simply continue to come without end. Well, the end is now. The LA Rams have won the past two games against the 49ers. And you can tell by how many red jerseys scrambled to get out of the stadium
It was the departing of the Red Sea. And the image of so many red jerseys leaving SoFi Stadium with shoulders slumped and a demure expression on their faces is a great way to end the Week 3 victory.
I don't mind visiting fans attending at SoFi. But I insist upon a little respect. And if no respect is given, then I am happy to witness humility getting served up. 49ers fans are not very respectful.
Thousands of 49ers fans were humbled in Week 3. If they return with the same level of disrespect, I'm more than happy to see a repeat in 2025.
As always, thanks for reading.
