5 bold predictions for LA Rams in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions
By Bret Stuter
(2) - Rams will get at least one interception against QB Jared Goff
Since being traded from the LA Rams, veteran QB Jared Goff has certainly learned much better ball security. In his five seasons as quarterback for the LA Rams, he threw 107 touchdowns and 55 interceptions, averaging 21.4 TDs and 11.0 interceptions per season. While not bad, his interception rate rose over time, while his touchdown rate declined.
In three seasons with the Detroit Lions, Goff has thrown 78 touchdowns and 27 interceptions, averaging 26.0 touchdowns and 9.0 interceptions per season. He has noticeably improved his ability to throw a touchdown pass while throwing measurably fewer interceptions.
Against the Rams defense in the Wild Card Round last season, he threw one touchdown pass and did not throw an interception.
But before we shake our heads in some form of open despair, the Rams secondary was not exactly known as a ball-hawking bunch of defensive backs. In 17 games, the secondary could only muster 10 interceptions. That is abysmally low.
While the Lions will skate by without having to face Darious Williams, the Rams will suit up ball-hawking defensive backs Tre'Davious White and Kamren Kinchens. And the team's secondary rounded out with Quentin Lake, Kamren Curl, and Cobie Durant will certainly have picking off a pass in their sights for this one.
Even if just a tipped ball ends up in a Rams defender's hands, I'm counting that among the possibilities. The Rams want this game more. They will find a way.
