5 Rams players who are on the roster bubble after NFL Draft
By Bret Stuter
The 2024 NFL Draft is over, and for all intents and purposes, the next few weeks will be filled with trying to sort through the speed rounds of Day 3 of the draft for the LA Rams, as well as their very impressive rookies signed after the draft. Now, we have the arduous task of trying to fit the 1000 pieces of this Rams roster jigsaw puzzle into the image of the 2024 53-man active roster. Then we will try to judge who will be signed to the practice squad.
Which leads to this topic: Which returning Rams veterans already find themselves on the roster bubble after the 2024 NFL Draft?
While attacking this question so early has some flawed logic, there are already some breadcrumbs left on the trail for discerning eyes to find and follow. What do I mean? Well, we will discuss the matter of backup quarterback Stetson Bennett, and how the strategy employed by the Rams in the 2024 NFL Draft sheds a flashlight on the Rams plans for him and the entire quarterback room.
We know that the Rams are comfortable with veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford as their starting quarterback in 2024. With a solid investment in the offensive line in front of him, he put on a stellar performance that did not go unnoticed. The team also addressed the backup quarterback role with a one-year deal for veteran QB Jimmy Garoppolo. But Jimmy G. will serve a two-game suspension when the season begins.
The team needs a backup QB for those two games.
Knowing all of this, the Rams did not draft a quarterback. The team did not even sign a promising quarterback to develop after the 2024 NFL Draft. It's clear that the team intends for second-year quarterback Stetson Bennett to earn the right to backup Stafford in Weeks 1 and 2.
Even with OTA, training camp, and preseason activity on the horizon, the logical conclusion is that the coaching staff is already comfortable with Bennett assuming that responsibility in 2024. So what other clues do we have above the future of the Rams roster?
