It's more than winning the game for Rams players. This is about forging the type of bonds that transcend the football field. 90 players assembled on the LA Rams roster at the start of OTAs. They are no longer 90 individual players. They are truly becoming one team.
In terms of the Rams schedule of preseason games, it's two down, and just one to go. Unfortunately, in terms of NFL careers, 53 players will discover that they have earned the right to remain and compete as players for this team in 2024. 37 other players will not be nearly as fortunate. As a consolation prize, 16 players who are released will have the opportunity to return to the team as a member of the practice squad.
All NFL teams must trim their roster to 53 players by 1:00 pm PT on August 27, 2024. That is just over one week away. While we likely agree on the first 10 or so players to release, I fear that there will be a lot of disagreement among fans as we trim deeper. Too many players have played far too well to be shed easily.
And so, we find ourselves at an impasse. Who goes, and who stays?
Well, there will always be more than one solution to a problem. If we cannot make strong cases over who should go, perhaps we can make strong cases for who should stay on the roster? After all, two preseason games are fresh in our minds, and the decisions over who makes the team cannot be finalized just yet.
Despite the tradition of sitting players who have earned their place on the team's roster, the preseason performances of these players has been too good to ignore. Whether it has been a combination of how they have shown up on special teams, in addition to their regular positional roles, or simply a matter of how versatile they are, these players have earned the right to compete for the team throughout the 2024 NFL season.
Who are they? Let's find out together.
