6 players who must perform well for Rams Game 2, including Stetson Bennett
By Bret Stuter
(3) - RB Zach Evans
It seems as though every year, there is that one running back who is just a bit bigger who I lobby hard for, and who seems to fall short of expectations. In 2023, that 'bigger' back was RB Royce Freeman. It seems that in 2024, that running back could turn out to be second-year rusher Zach Evans
While he did seem to get amply playing time, he didn't seem to make much of an impact on offense. Evans played 30 offensive snaps, rushed 12 times for 28 yards (a pedestrian 2.3 yards per carry) and caught the only pass thrown his way for an very impressive 24 yards. But I will be honest, if not for that 24-yard pass play, I would already be sticking a fork in Evans right now.
Does Evans have a chance to make this roster? Maybe not. But I'd hate to believe that the team has already given away all roster slots for running backs before any preseason games were played. While we did not see either RB Kyren Williams or Blake Corum in the first preseason game, Ronnie Rivers did not play either (although the broadcast booth insisted that Boston Scott was Ronnie Rivers. I have rewatched the game several times, Rivers did not play.)
With that being said, are Boston Scott and Zach Evans fighting for a chance to sit on the team's practice squad? I cannot believe that to be the case, not yet. While Scott had the more productive game in preseason so far, in every aspect, I am not extinguishing my hope that Zach Evans makes the team. He certainly has play-making ability as a receiver.
Evans had some good preseason games in 2023. I think that he can still show up in preseason in 2024. But this is the week to do so. He needs a huge game in the worst way. Time to see what he is made of.
