6 projected Day 2 targets for LA Rams in talent-packed draft
By Bret Stuter
With the 52nd overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, the LA Rams select . . .
If the team wishes to add a prospect to the offense, then WR Xavier Legette makes sense here. Legette is a 6-foot-1 221-pound who has superhero speed that can stretch the defense and open up the entire playbook on any given play. In the NFL, teams have often been forced to choose between speed, size, or route running. But Legette wraps all coveted traits into one rookie receiver prospect who is ready to take his game to the next level.
The Rams can check multiple boxes with Legette, as he also has experience to fill the void on special teams as an elite return specialist as well. But Legette is not a receiver who makes the roster on special teams. Rather, he is the guy who can be an incredibly effective offensive weapon who can also lend his jaw-dropping speed (4.39 second 40-yard dash) to special teams.
Some will slide Legette down their draft boards due to the fact that he only burst onto the scene in his final season. But Xavier Legette persevered through a lifetime of heartbreak and adversity, and his final season with the South Carolina Gamecocks was more victory lap than one-hit wonder. I believe that Xavier Legette is a natural and complementary fit in the Rams offense, and can be a nice addition to a receiver room that already boasts WRs Puka Nacua, Cooper Kupp, Demarcus Robinson, Tutu Atwell, Ben Skowronek, and Tyler Johnson.
Cornered in the secondary
If the team wishes to add a solid prospect to the defense, then defensive back Kamari Lassiter could be the right choice in Round 2. Standing just shy of 6-foot-0 and weighing 186 pounds, Lassiter is a versatile and effective defensive back who could come in and immediately compete for playing time. He has a fiery mindset, the type of competitive spirit that burns hotter as the level of competition increases. He truly loves to compete, which will be incredibly beneficial by training with and opposing the Rams receivers in training camp.
Lassiter is a shopping mall of secondary skillsets. He covers sideline to sideline with solid lateral awareness. He can cover a receiver deep, and instinctively reads his target as to timing his play on the football. He is a solid and sure-handed tackler as well, giving solid run support. He even has a veteran's data base of coverages that allows him to excel in zone, man, or press-man coverages. It's that solid knowledge that makes him ideally suited to compete instantly in this secondary.
