9 bold predictions for the Los Angeles Rams for the 2024 season
By Bret Stuter
(5) Rams will end season with a positive net turnover
The most fascinating fact about the LA Rams offense in 2023 is the manner in which the team was able to secure the football. The Rams allowed just 18 giveaways in 2023, their best performance since hiring HC Sean McVay in 2017. Prior to 2023, the lowest number of giveaways by this team was 19, set in the 2018 NFL season.
The problem is, the Rams generated 30 takeaways in 2018, giving the team a phenomenal +11 net turnovers that year. But if you fast forward to 2023, the Rams generated only half that number of takeaways, 15 to be exact, ending the season with a -(3) net turnovers for the year.
The last time the team had a positive net turnover was 2021. The time prior to that was 2018. Notice the pattern? If the Rams can generate a positive net turnover number, this team has a real shot of competing in a Super Bowl. In the three occasions with a net turnover number, the team has competed in the Super Bowl twice.
And this team is going to end 2024 with a net turnover number.
(4) Rookie K Joshua Karty will kick 2 game winning FGs
There seems to be a fixation over rookie kicker Joshua Karty, and an unhealthy one at that. Rookie kickers are notoriously up and down in their rookie season. One week they are the hero for making an unlikely game-winning field goal. The next week, they miss an extra point or a chip-shot field goal that works out into a loss. And the most vocal fans make their frustration felt on the downside of the rookies first season, swelling social media, forums, and comments sections demanding the kicker be cut instantly.
But who do you have in mind as a replacement?
Every rookie kicker has up and down weeks. So rather than focus on the downside, or set unrealistic goals for Joshua Karty in his rookie season, let's focus on some positives. My bold prediction for Joshua Karty is that he will win two games by kicking a go-ahead field goal in the fourth quarter. Ultimately, that is what you want to see from your kicker.
Let's pull ourselves out of the micro-management of putting every field goal and extra point attempt under the microscope. Sometimes, the final score is such that they have far less impact in the grand scheme. But on those occasions when a successful kick can win a game as time runs out, Joshua Karty will come through. Twice.
