Starting over again is not something many expected as a strategy for the LA Rams this season, particularly in light of the fact that this was a team that had just dominated the NFL in winning Super Bowl LVI. But there were more factors that were 'wrong' with the LA Rams team than just injuries. What am I talking about? Let's put a pin in that thought for a moment, as I have another point to discuss:

Gloria Estefan (a popular singer from the 1980s) co-wrote a song named Coming Out of the Dark (Coming Out of the Dark lyrics © Foreign Imported Prod. And Publishing) and was inspired by Gloria Estefan's tour bus suffering a horrific crash in the Pennsylvania Poconos on snow-covered roads. The crash gave Gloria Estafan a broken back, forcing her to convalesce over a prolonged hospital stay.

In an article by USA Today's Erin Jensen, Gloria Estefan is quoted as saying of that chapter in her life:
‘Be in each and every moment, that’s the only thing you really have that’s guaranteed.'

What an insightful quote. When you focus on the distractions of life, we often lose touch with the things that matter the most. And while it's quite common, it's a subtle and slow process that we suddenly wake up to realize at a pivotal moment in our life. While not his exact words, Estefan's message from 30 years prior struck me as very similar to quotes attributed to LA Rams head coach Sean McVay.

Let's revisit that post-season press conference of Rams HC Sean McVay. Do you hear the message that he was saying between the lines now? The fierce competitor of McVay had to face the crossroads that was laid out in front of him. Did McVay want to coach a young team once more? Could Rams Coach McVay settle for a team that was pragmatically not a contender in 2023? That was the key factor, the lynchpin in his offseason dilemma.
