Starting over again is part of the plan

Pivotal moments come to all of us in one form or another. Perhaps it is in the form of an unexpected divorce. Perhaps it comes in the form of the death of a loved one. Perhaps we lose our job due to an economic downturn. Whatever the cause, we must all face that moment of truth where we take stock of our lives and decide what will we do for the next chapter.

At the end of the 2022 NFL season, LA Rams head coach Sean McVay had to decide for himself what would be his next chapter. There is a fundamental question, a pure moment of honesty where we all learn who we truly are. It comes in the form of two questions: Either we ask ourselves the question, Why Me? Or we ask ourselves, For what purpose? Where will this take me?

The pause that Sean McVay had to take after the 2022 NFL season was his pivotal moment. He was torn, battered mentally and emotionally by a 5-12 season, as much as his injured players were battered physically. McVay had to make a choice. He had to accept the challenge of a new season, one in which he would be coaching a team of young, eager, and energetic players. Or he could step away from the game.

Pivotal moment

This was the same pivotal moment that singer/songwriter Gloria Estefan had so beautifully put down in the form of lyrics that became one of the greatest popular hits of her career. Here is an extract from that hit song:

"Starting again is part of the plan
And I'll be so much stronger, Holding your hand
Step by step, I'll make it through, I know I can
I may not make it easier,
But I have felt you,
Near all the way"

In the end, Sean McVay made the changes internally. He did so willingly, not from a sense of duty or loyalty, but out of a sense of love for the game. Playing for the love of the game of football is an essential component to all coaches and players. It's what keeps them chasing the dream, despite facing overwhelming odds that they will not be able to see it through. The LA Rams, by easing back on the throttle of the team for the 2023 NFL season, forced Coach McVay to follow suit, and ease back on the throttle as well.
