As you can see by the table above, the performance of any NFL rookie quarterback is truly a bit of random luck. as the rookie quarterbacks who have seen action this season have an aggregate record of 19 wins to 30 losses. And you cannot simply excuse their performances this season as playing for bad teams. Quarterbacking in the NFL is one of the most challenging positions to handle, and is doubly difficult to a rookie, who is experiencing everything for the first time in his NFL debut.

Risk vs. reward of a rookie QB in 2024

The LA Rams have no assurances of landing a C.J. Stroud in the 2024 NFL Draft. The team, through no fault of their own, could just as likely land a Bryce Young, Hitting on a rookie quarterback is no better than a 50/50 chance no matter how well the team drafts.

The challenge with the LA Rams chances of drafting an immediate star is that the rookie is unlikely to see meaningful playing time playing behind Rams starting quarterback Matthew Stafford. Unless Stafford is injured, any Rams rookie quarterback in 2024 will likely get their most work in training camp, preseason games, and running the Rams scouting team.

There is a fine balance to an NFL Draft strategy. The Rams could view drafting a quarterback in 2024 as a necessary investment to ensure the Rams secure a future franchise quarterback for years to come. On the other hand, the Rams could opt to select a non-QB rookie in Round 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft, and like Rams rookies in 2023, that rookie could make an immediate impact on the Rams next season.
