Getting off to a hot start is vital for the LA Rams chances in 2024

While the NFL Playoffs are months away, it's never to early to put the playoff picture in the corner of your eye.

III: Carry over momentum

The LA Rams were one of the hottest teams in the NFL in the latter half of the season. Just 3-6 at their Week 10 BYE, the Rams tore into the last half of the year with a 7-1 record. The Rams lost on the road in overtime in a downpour to one of the hottest teams in the NFL, the Baltimore Ravens. And this team lost in the Wild Card Round of the 2024 NFL Playoffs on the road against the Detroit Lions by a score of 24-23, a loss of just one point.

If the Rams start out hot in 2024, that momentum has indeed carried over to the new season. If the Rams stumble out of the gates in 2024, all of last season's momentum is lost, as though it never happened.

While there may be concerns as to how successful this team will be against some of the first five opponents on the 2024 NFL schedule, here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. The LA Rams lost a very close game on the road against the Detroit Lions in the 2024 NFL Playoffs. This was a game in which Detroit Lions fans not only booed QB Matthew Stafford but also booed his wife and daughters. The Wild Card game was certainly entertaining. But this one is personal for Stafford. The Rams will rally around their quarterback in this one.
  2. The LA Rams last lost to the Arizona Cardinals at SoFi Stadium on November 13, 2022, by a score of 27-17. The Rams were without QB Matthew Stafford, much of a running game, and never really put up much of a fight. Since that game, the Rams have won two consecutive games against the Cardinals.
  3. Believe it or not, the Rams defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Week 18. Now it's the Rams who hope to extend their winning streak against their NFC Western Divisional rivals.
  4. While there is much ado about Chicago Bears rookie QB Caleb Williams, an inexperienced prospect who has already publicly set his aim to surpass now-retired QB Tom Brady. Call me unimpressed.
  5. While the Rams are still struggling to defeat the Green Bay Packers, the Rams have two clear differences this season. The Packers finally travel to face the Rams at SoFi Stadium, their first visit to the Rams home venue. And the Rams will have a healthy Matthew Stafford under center this year.

If you examine the last games that the Rams played against these five opponents, you will find that the Rams hold a 3-2 record, while outscoring these five teams by a score of 118 to 92.

While the past does not ensure success this season, it should help to reassure any fans who are not feeling warm and fuzzy about the 2024 season, yet.
