LA Rams reforges a new draft strategy

For years, NFL analysts, pundits, and even some Rams fans have trolled the Rams over the fact that the team was willing to trade their first-round NFL Draft picks for proven elite playmakers. That was a very effective strategy, sending the Rams to the Super Bowl twice over the span of five years. But like any strategy that works, the NFL caught up with the LA Rams.

In 2022, the San Francisco 49ers outbid the Rams for Caolina Panthers star RB Christian McCaffrey. Immediately after, the same Panthers outright rejected an LA Rams bid for DE Brian Burns. And so, the Rams find themselves no longer able to jump ahead in the development of elite players. That does not mean that the Rams will not acquire them. Rather, it simply means that the LA Rams will now need to draft and develop them.

If the LA Rams held all of their original 2023 NFL Draft picks plus those acquired via trading players, the Rams would have 14 picks, and would have more draft ammunition than all but two NFL teams (Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks).

Compensatory Picks

Right now, the LA Rams future draft picks are nowhere near 'certain,' but we have been tallying awarded compensatory 2024 NFL Draft picks and as of March 19, 2023, we are projecting:

Round 4 - TBD
Round 5 - TBD
Round 6 - Three picks (Gay to Colts, Scott to Bengals, Mayfield to Bucs)
Round 7 - TBD
Total Comp Picks - 3

Total Picks

With seven alloted picks and currently projecting three compensatory picks, the LA Rams are looking at another ten picks in the 2024 NFL Draft. That is huge, and we will certainly talk about what that opens up for the Rams strategy over the course of 2023 and 2024.

Round 1 – One pick
Round 2 – One pick
Round 3 – One pick
Round 4 – One pick
Round 5 – One pick
Round 6 - Five picks
Round 7 - No picks
Total - Ten picks

Ten drat picks in 2024 is great, but the cherry on top is the fact that the Rams will finally have an opportunity to step up to the 2024 NFL Draft podium on Day 1 to announce their selection. Okay, that is good news indeed. But what comes after?
