The LA Rams may be limited in terms of a 53 man roster. They may be limited in terms of a 16-man practice squad. The team may even be limited in terms of how many times players can be returned form the IR list to the active roster over the course of an NFl season. But there are no limits as to how many members are aboard the team's coaching staff, front office, and data analytics staff.

So the Rams football team is expanding the expertise in those areas.

Case in point. The LA Rams are hiring former UCF and Nebraska HC Scott Frost as a Senior Football Analyst. While head coach of the University of Central Florida, HC Scott Frost led the 6-7 UCF Knights to an undefeated 13-0 record in 2017. The following season, he accepted the head coaching role with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, never realizing the same level of success.

Scott Frost cut his offensive teeth under former Oregon HC Chip Kelly and the innovative but ultimately short-lived blur offense. He perfected the blur at UCF, reshaping the same concepts like the zone read, pin and pull sweeps, and the power running game. Frost recognized the inherent vulnerability of the blur offense and complicated the offense to frustrate defenses trying to key on pre-snap movement. All the while, he sustained those run/pass options and other in-game options that exploit what defenses do to optimize yards gained.

USA Football.com author Ted Nguyen covered Coach Frost's ascension to the Nebraska head coaching job and got a key quote from Frost in the article:

"My time at Oregon with Chip, and then taking his offense and continuing to evolve it, that is really what’s gotten us to where we are. "

Scott Frost

While the LA Rams will not be infusing blur offensive strategies into their offense, per The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue, Frost's duties in this new role will overlap with the recently vacated assistant special team coach job due to Coach Chile Davis's release.

Frost may not scream 'Analytics,' from his previous work, but he has a sharp and analytical offensive mind that has been honed to perfection through the trials and tribulations of coaching. He has been unemployed since his release from Nebraska in November 2022, and this could simply be a gratuity hire to get Coach Frost back in the thick of football once more.

But I suspect that there is more to this than meets the eye.

It's crystal clear that Scott Frost thinks outside of the box in terms of offensive and general football concepts. And we know that the Rams coaching staff loves to clip and graft unique and positive lines of thinking to their coaching staff to ensure fresh and innovative concepts are continuously added every year, if for nothing more than to replace the talent poached annually by other NFL teams at season's end.

We may not be able to point and attribute Scott Frost's influence on the LA Rams success in 2024 and beyond. But this has always been a 'We not me,' type of team. So we will know how successful this hire will become if he becomes one of the coaches poached by another NFL team in the years ahead.
