LA Rams begin roster moves by releasing Tanner Brown and Cam Lampkin
By Bret Stuter
The LA Rams have a lot of work to do. No, I'm not referring to the heating-up current rumors about malcontent NFL WR Davante Adams requesting a trade for the second time in his NFL career. While some fans' attention may steer in that direction, don't look for much interest out of the Rams' front office. You see, this team has a full day's work on the schedule.
Over the course of the next several weeks, the Rams must begin the slow and strategic process of restoring rehabbed players from Injured Reserve to the active Rams roster. And with the frequency of injuries impacting the team long before the season ever began, the team will make quick work of their eight restorations this season.
The reason why the work required to restore players from IR Is so great is that roster slots must be vacated. That means at least one additional roster move to vacate a slot, Unfortunately, it can also require multiple roster moves to vacate a practice squad roster spot for players waived from the active roster, signing the active roster player to a practice squad slot, and signing IR players to the active roster.
Those moves are taking place right now:
So let's explore the two players impacted by these roster moves.
Kicker Tanner Brown is a second-year player who just did not work out for the Rams in 2023. But he has trained with the team for two seasons now, as as such is as good as it gets in terms of plug-and-play placekicker signed off free agent. He was signed to provide an emergency callup from the team's practice squad in the unfortunate circumstances that rookie kicker Joshua Karty was unable to suit up due to a groin injury. Brown's release suggests that Karty has successfully recovered from his injuries.
Defensive back Cam Lampkin is a bit more complicated roster move. For starters, you may be surprised to learn that he is the other Washington State rookie signed by the team this season. While exclusively a special teams player this season, Lampkin did play rather well in the preseason, allowing just six of 11 passes to find their mark. Standing 5-foot-11 and weighing 176 pounds, he was by no means the biggest player on pass coverage for the team. But he is a feisty young man who shows promise. I expect that he could re-sign on the team's practice squad after he clears waivers.
Release Lampkin is a good sign that DB Darious Williams is considered on a fast track to return in time to suit up for Week 5. And it make sense for the team to prioritize DWill, as this secondary is struggling mightily.
If you want this team to shake things up, the roster is a' rocking now. Stay tuned.
And as always, thanks for reading.
