LA Rams fans will find it impossible not to love rookie OLB Jared Verse in 2024
By Bret Stuter
With the retirement of All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald, Rams fans will have plenty of options to choose from in terms of defensive stars to cheer especially loud for. For fundamental football enthusiasts, the obvious choice is veteran inside linebacker Ernest Jones IV. Not only is he fundamentally sound, but he has been one of the most consistent players on the defensive side of the football.
But if you want solid interior defensive linemen, you have the option of choosing second-year sensation DT Kobie Turner, or rookie standout DL Braden Fiske. And if you want a guy who is quick and savvy, there is always an option to cheer especially loud for OLB Byron Young.
But I suspect that many LA Rams fans, whether by choice or not, will find themselves drawn to cheering for the non-stop chatter of rookie outside linebacker Jared Verse.
In professional football, there are two main types of players. Those who say very little, allowing their football performance on the football field to do their talking. But then there is the other category, the type that tells anyone with a hot microphone and a video camera all of their future accomplishments. It's the trash talkers, the guys who love to tell you, rather than show you, what they are all about.
Bu rarely, oh so rarely, there is a player who tells you what he is about to do on the football field, and then goes out and does it. Those are the players who seem to be playing around, but take the game oh so seriously.
Jared Verse is a talker who backs it up on the football field. And he just arrived to the NFL as a member of the LA Rams defense:
The thing is, as much as he claims that he will do, he seems to do a little bit more, a little bit better.
Even while many have low expectations for this team's defense, Verse is just one young player who will ensure that this defense plays better than projected. Because the Rams' defense is so young, the more they play, the better they become.
Perhaps I love what Jared Verse brings to this defense, because he gives the fans reason to hope. He sells good play, and then has go on to play great. That is a sure fire way of ensuring fans not only take notice, but cheer with every play.
