Do you believe in miracles? Well, if the LA Rams pull off what they need to do in the 2023 NFL Draft, you will have witnessed one. What am I talking about? Well if seven loaves and two fishes can feed the multitudes and be considered a miracle thousands of years ago, then the LA Rams task of using just 11 NFL draft picks to plug 46 holes in their roster ought to qualify too, right?

Of course, not all 46 open spots in the Rams roster are going to translate into starters, or even into players who will ultimately make the Rams 53-man roster. Quite the contrary, to be more accurate. But even if all 44 current players make the Rams 53-man roster, the LA Rams are still looking for:

  • Nine players to make the active 53-man roster
  • All special teams specialists: Punter, kicker, long snapper, and kickoff/punt returner. All four will not only make the roster, but fill starting roles on STs
  • 16 players who will be re-signed to the LA Rams practice squad, many of whom could play more significant roles as the season progresses

Beyond the seven for the active roster, and 16 players for the practice squad, the Rams will need another 21 players to round out the roster, compete for a roster spot, and elevate the performance of the team during training camp drills.

This is it, the final week leading up to the 2023 NFL Draft. We'll be pivoting our focus for the next 7-10 days to focus on the 2023 NFL Draft. In the days leading up to the draft, we'll look at players who offer value to the Rams offense, defense or special teams. As the draft progresses, we will track the Rams selections, and as we've done in the past, we will offer up other intriguing players who remained on the board who the Rams did not select.

Finally, we'll cover the most important chapter of the LA Rams roster building this season, that mad candy scramble over who the LA Rams are signing to contracts as 32 teams race to get undrafted rookies on the roster.

Few if any NFL teams have taken the LA Rams approach before, so we have little to go on in the way of sharing what to expect. We can say that the LA Rams are likely to sign as many as 35 undrafted free agent rookies this year, which is a huge number of rookies to add to a draft class that currently numbers 11.

Just seven days to decide on 46 players to add to the LA Rams roster. That really doesn't seem like a very long time, particularly when you consider just how important these rookies will be to the future of the Rams organization.
