LA Rams release of 2 former players sets stage for their return to UFL
By Bret Stuter
The LA Rams loaded up on offensive linemen to carry the team through preseason. After all, at one time, the team had to compensate for injuries to LT Alaric Jackson, RT Rob Havenstein, LG Jonah Jackson, OT Warren McClendon, and even rookie OT KT Leveston. While McClendon managed to play through the pain of an ankle injury, the remaining four offensive linemen were not so lucky.
That was almost like the bat signal flashing into the nighttime sky from Gotham City. The Rams front office sprang into action. Not by a batmobile or bat plane. Rather, the team needed reinforcements, and needed them quickly. And so, the team signed IOL Alec LIndstrom, OT Matt Kaskey, and OT Conor McDermott.
That would be enough to get the team through preseason, McClendon would continue to play through his tweaked ankle. Eventually, LG Jonah Jackson's injured shoulder would heal enough for him to begin individual training exercises. With players beginning to heal, and roster cuts upon the team, the new additions were no longer needed. And so, Both OT Matt Kaskey and IOL Alec Lindstrom were two of the initial wave of roster cuts announced by the team:
Offensive tackle Matt Kaskey will likely have role waiting for him with the Birmingham Stallions in the newly formed UFL. And IOL Alec Lindstrom will likely return to his former role as the center for the Memphis Showboats.
While their stay was limited, I was proud to say that the team extended opportunities to UFL players, however remote their chances were of actually making the team. Thanks to their opportunities with the Rams, both players will return to the UFL with tales to their teammates about the chapter of competing with the LA Rams, and perhaps preparing future players who sign with the team to optimize their opportunities in Horns.
Only OT Conor McDermott remains, and I don't see that as random coincidence. McDermott has NFL experience, played 50 snaps for the team in preseason, and was relatively effective for the team with little time to practice or prepare. With the future of both OT Alaric Jackson expected to last at least until Week 3, and OT Rob Havenstein having no clear estimated time to return, the team would be wise to stay deep at the offensive tackle position for now.
The team has 23 more roster cuts to announce. Stay tuned to all updates throughout the next 36 hours by checking out our LA Rams Roster Cuts Tracker frequently throughout the day. Cuts will get more difficult to accept as they get progressively into more talented players.
And as always, thank you for listening.
