Logan Bruss leads a sensational OL performance for Rams in Game 1 of preseason
By Bret Stuter
Perhaps the third time is the charm for the besieged LA Rams interior offensive lineman Logan Bruss. After a devastating knee injury ended his rookie season in 2022, and lingered into 2023, Is the former offensive lineman back on track to deliver on his long-awaited potential? Well, after signing on to the Rams practice squad for the entirety of the 2023 NFL season, that certainly would be safe conjecture.
Logan Bruss was one of the five starters on the offensive line for the Rams offense to play in Game 1 of the preseason against the Dallas Cowboys. While there may be concerns over the team's starters in that three of the five projected starters continue to be plagued with nagging injuries that continue to prevent them from practicing, the depth of the team's offensive line is not suffering a similar set of challenges.
In fact, the team's backup offensive linemen played a pretty outstanding game for their preseason debut:
While I was very excited to see my first live performance by rookie center Beaux Limmer, I was also happy to see Logan Bruss finally looking the part that the Rams front office and coaching staff hoped he might become when he was drafted in Round 3 of the 2022 NFL Draft with the 104th overall pick.
Since that time, Bruss has been battling an injury suffered in his rookie season. Now, two years later, it appears that he has overcome that devastating setback. And he helped the Rams' offensive line to show up in a big way in their preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. So, how did each player do? All snap counts and grades are provided by Pro Football Focus.
- LT AJ Arcuri - 71 snaps, 66.2 overall grade (PFF)
- LG Zach Thomas - 46 snaps, 84.1 overall grade (PFF)
- LG Justin Dedich - 25 snaps, 73.0 overall grade (PFF)
- C Beaux Limmer - 44 snaps, 82.5 passing grade (PFF)
- C Mike McCalister - 27 snaps, 49.3 overall grade (PFF) | 3 penalties
- RG Logan Bruss - 71 snaps, 81.5 overall grade (PFF)
- RT Warren McClendon - 46 snaps, 68.8 overall grade (PFF)
- RT Blake Larson - 10 snaps, 63.5 overall grade (PFF)
- RT Conor McDermott - 15 snaps, 61.5 overall grade (PFF)
The only offensive linemen not projected to start or have significant roles in 2024 are IOL Grant Miller, OL Alec Linstrom (recently signed FA), and OL Matt Kaskey (recently signed FA). I would expect the trio to see some action in the team's second preseason game.
As you can see, the Rams offensive linemen represented themselves quite well in the first preseason game of the sesaon. Two of the Rams offensive linemen appeared among the Top-5 Rams players graded from Game 1 of the preseason:
While the team acted swiftly to add veteran offensive linemen to handle the workload of practices through preseason, it's clear that the team has reason to trust the depth of this team, particularly in terms of the interior offensive linemen. The team played three separate offensive linemen at the right tackle position, which should bear some monitoring in the next several weeks.
What appeared to be a nightmarish scenario of incessant injuries to offensive linemen in training camp seems to be more than handled by the depth of the team's offensive linemen.
But with so much depending on the strength, durability, and performance of the team's offensive line in 2024, we will continue to monitor the players throughout preseason.
And as always, thanks for reading
