Rams named best landing spot for former All Pro defensive lineman
By Ryan Heckman
Last year, one of the biggest stories with the Los Angeles Rams came on the defensive side of the ball.
Specifically, it was a pair of rookie third rounders who made a significant impact on a unit that wasn't given much of a chance to perform. Noboby -- and I mean, nobody -- had the Rams defense as a unit to watch, even though they still sported one of the league's scariest players in Aaron Donald.
No, it was both Kobie Turner and Byron Young who came in and made an even bigger impact than anyone could have anticipated. Between the two of them, the Rams were able to get a total of 17.0 sacks in 2023.
The Rams' defense played so much better than anyone thought, that Raheem Morris was immediately launched back into head coaching considerations, and landed a job in Atlanta. Speaking of Atlanta, one former Falcons defensive lineman is available in free agency and the Rams look to be a logical fit.
Calais Campbell would be a smart signing for a Rams defense that lost Aaron Donald
Pro Football Network's Dallas Robinson recently wrote that he believes the Rams are a great landing spot for former Falcons defensive lineman Calais Campbell.
"The Rams rebuilt their secondary this offseason by adding CBs Tre’Davious White and Darious Williams and S Kam Curl, but Los Angeles could stand to add defensive line reinforcements after Aaron Donald’s surprising retirement," Robinson wrote.
The retirement from Donald certainly leaves the Rams with a gigantic void that no one could ever come close to filling. From here on out, the Rams are going to have to figure out life after Donald and may have to dramatically change their strategy going forward.
Campbell can play both inside and outside, and is still an effective pass rusher at 37 years old. He's a guy the Rams could sign if they wanted to add more depth in the wake of Donald's retirement while giving the young guys another leader they can not only look up to, but watch perform at a high level, still.
The 6-time Pro Bowler and former All Pro defensive lineman isn't yet ready to call it a career and would be the perfect addition to this Rams defensive line. Last year, he posted 6.5 sacks and 24 quarterback pressures, which were both the highest he's had since 2019.
