As the LA Rams turned to the 2024 offseason and what moves the team might make to reform the roster for another NFL season, some lobbied long and hard for the team to follow a familiar path, but with a twist. The team seemed to have a knack for restoring the luster of NFL quarterbacks who had lost their luster in the eyes of NFL teams.
Former Cleveland Browns/Carolina Panthers QB Baker Mayfield was on his last legs when he flew to Los Angeles to play for the LA Rams. But he quickly recaptured his passion for the game and the respect of NFL teams in competing hard for the Rams in the second half of a lost season in 2022. He has since taken over as the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a successor for legendary quarterback Tom Brady.
So too, veteran QB Carson Wentz arrived to the Rams mid season in 2023 with a tarnished reputation. But Wentz led the junior varsity squad to victory over the NFC West Division rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, in the last game of the 2023 NFL season.
Rams fans loved what they saw from both veteran quarterbacks when the donned The Horns and played in HC Sean McVay's offense. So, if they could flourish, why not reach out to the New York Jets and acquire their young but downtrodden quarterback, Zach Wilson, and see if third time was truly a charm?
The logic seemed sound enough, didn't it? After all, the Rams would love to add a young arm to the quarterback room who was drafted with the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, wouldn't they? And Wilson would love to get onboard the Rams restoration regimen for out-of-favor NFL quarterbacks. Finally, the New York Jets would love to get that money off their books.
But a funny thing happened on the way of the Rams trading for Zach Wilson. Well, two things actually . . .
