NFL insider suggests the Rams trade a fan favorite to the Chiefs following key injury
At 1-3, the Los Angeles Rams have dug themselves into a hole that will be difficult to climb out of. That being said, NFL insiders have already started to group the Rams key players into trades, as the NFL trade deadline isn't until November and the Rams have some intriguing pieces that could make sense with contending teams.
The back-to-back reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs suffered a major setback in Sunday's win over the other Los Angeles-based team losing Rashee Rice to what is presumed to be a torn ACL. If Rice has to miss the rest of the season, the Chiefs might be desperate enough to give up a ton of draft picks for a WR1.
More Rams news
Well, it just so happens that the Rams have two players who could fit the WR1 bill in Kansas City. Peter Schrager suggested that Chiefs GM Brett Veach should have the Rams on the phone to inquire about a trade for Cooper Kupp.
Could the Rams really trade Cooper Kupp to the Chiefs?
Kupp has been with the Rams since they spent a third-round pick on him in the 2017 draft. The Eastern Washington product immediately made his mark on the rest of the league, tallying over 800 yards receiving as a rookie. By Year 3, he was a 1,000+ yard-caliber receiver and put together a career year in 2021 with 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns. That was the year the Rams went on to win the Super Bowl with Kupp winning Super Bowl MVP.
Unfortunately, ever since that magical season, Kupp has struggled to stay healthy and that's the reason why I don't think the Chiefs would take a risk on trading for Kupp. The former third-round pick has missed at least five games since that 2021 season and the Chiefs are trying to add a receiver who is healthy enough to contribute and help them three-peat as Super Bowl champs. Not to mention, Kupp has already missed two games this year with a high-ankle sprain.
If the Chiefs did come calling for Kupp, the Rams should definitely listen for the reasons I listed above. I know he's a fan favorite and has done great things for this franchise but the Rams probably aren't winning anything this year and might as well get something for Kupp while teams still find him valuable enough to trade for.
It'd be hard to see Kupp go, but again, earning draft picks and trying to get a jumpstart on a potential rebuild could be the smart move here for Los Angeles.
