NFL Network's Steve Wyche loves this former Rams PS player to make roster

NFL Network's Steve Wyche has been quite pleased with the Rams receivers so far. He even names a player from the 2023 practice squad as one who will make the Rams roster in 2024.

If you have not been following the LA Rams through preseason, then all I can say is that you may be misled by the comments about this team that have arisen over the past two or or so weeks. You see, there has been a lot of complaining about backup quarterback Stetson Bennett, but I fear that dissent is too focused on his five interceptions, and not enough focus is being placed on his NFL leading 437 passing yards in just two preseason games.

Those passing yards have allowed the Rams to get superb production out of a six-pack of receivers who have certainly put some great video footage in the hands of ever NFL GM. And you just know that if the Rams release the wrong player on their way to a 53-man roster limit, some team will be placing a claim on that player.

As a result of Bennett's passing, this team boasts two of the top-five NFL preseason wide receivers. Everyone is talking about Rams rookie WR Jordan Whittington, and rightfully so. But the 'other guy' in the Rams aerial offensive arsenal is starting to get noticed now as well. While a bit smaller than the NFL norm, WR Xavier Smith is back at it after a year on the team's practice squad, and he has been catching practically everything thrown his way.

That includes passes from Matthew Stafford, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Stetson Bennett. That type of excellence eventually gets noticed. And NFL Network's Steve Wyche may be the first, but he is not, the only NFL analyst to sit up and love what he is seeing from the Rams receiver so far:

The Rams have to find room for Xavier Smith if the team hopes to keep him on the roster. Once the NFL Network cites a player as 'NFL starter' material, there is no way the team can release that player with any hope of adding him to the practice squad this year.

And the team knows it.

Smith brings not only production to the offense as a receiver. He adds the versatility of running a jet sweep, as well as adding a dangerous dimension to special teams. We won't have long to wait to see who is, and is not, released from the team. But if Smith does not make the initial 53-man Rams roster, there will be more than one team happy to add him to theirs.
