Pat McAfee Show had this controversial take about the LA Rams offense
By Bret Stuter
When the LA Rams strategized how to restock the roster after the disappointing 2022 NFL season, the team cut ties with several high-priced veterans, and banked on a high-powered offense, and a pesky youth-powered defense, to win games in 2023. That worked better than expected, as the team ended the season with a record of 10-7, and nearly defeated the Detroit Lions on the road to advance to the Divisional Round of the 2024 NFL Playoffs.
When it comes to the national media perception of this 2024 NFL season, three presumptions about the LA Rams are becoming a common theme. They are:
- Rams offense will be very good
- Rams defense will not be very good
- Rams will need to score a lot of points to win games this season.
While we will push a pin on the talk about the defense for now, let's turn to and discuss why this LA Rams offense will be a nightmare for NFL defenses to face and foil in 2024. For openers, the seventh-ranked NFL offense upgraded on the offensive line, got deeper at running back, quarterback and tight end, and got much healthier at wide receiver
That led to NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky to say that the LA Rams offense is 'gonna be awesome.'
In fact, he not only lauded the offense, but he cited the reasons why the Rams are going to score points in bunches this season:
Dan Orlovsky had this to say about the Rams offense, and he did so with a rather excited and enthusiastic tone in his voice:
"I think they are going to be awesome. (Awesome? You think the Rams are going to be awesome?)
- Dan Orlovsky
Awesome.
I think the Rams are going to be as difficult an offense to contend that we have in the league. Maybe San Francisco. But like, the Rams offensive line is going to be awesome. They took (Michigan RB) Blake Corum so their one-two with Kyren (Williams and Blake Corum) is going to be devastating.
Their two receivers (Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua) are fantastic when it comes to winning on the edge.
I do not think Stafford throws for a gazillion yards because they are going to run the ball so much."
Nothing that Orlovsky stated is fiction, overhyped, or controversial. The Rams took everything that worked in 2023, and added depth and more talent to be even better at it in 2024. Where the Rams offense was truly powered by Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, and Kyren Williams in 2023, the same offense can expect big seasons from those three, plus Cooper Kupp, Blake Corum, and a surging performance from the tight end position from either second-year TE Davis Allen or newly-signed veteran Colby Parkinson.
The Rams averaged 23.8 points per game in 2023, good enough to be ranked eighth-best in the NFL at scoring. With all of the upgrades and added depth, the offense should land among the NFL's top three in terms of putting points on the scoreboard. And that presumes nothing improves in terms of the field goal kicking this year.
Look for the offense to mix a blend of tough runs with soul-stealing passes this year. The Rams have the type of blocking that a veteran quarterback like Matthew Stafford dreams about. Not only can the Rams run the football, but Stafford is the pilot of a high-flying offense once more.
