Perfect Matthew Stafford contingency plan just fell into the Rams' laps
By Bret Stuter
There is no time like the present. If there is anything the LA Rams should be learning about the 2024 NFL season after two games, it's the sobering realization that the team is burning through veterans at an unsustainable pace. Even now, we await injury updates for wide receiver Cooper Kupp and safety John Johnson III, The Rams roster is a medical professional's dream thesis, an abundance of orthopedic ailments that will take a lot of time to resolve.
And now, the strategy of who to return to the active 53-man roster, and whose season is done even though they can heal up and compete in 2024 begins to weigh heavily on the team. At the current rate of injuries, the team is losing ground on competitiveness rapidly. With only eight restorations, and more than that in current injuries, the team is already forced to determine which players have the highest priority to return to the team.
While it's too soon to toss in the white flag and surrender the season, it's not too soon to plan for the future. And it just so happens that the perfect LA Rams contingency plan may have just landed in their laps:
Okay, so how does this make any sense for the team? Adding a struggling young quarterback to a roster with a shaky offensive line and starting off 0-2 seems to be counterintuitive. Well, not to everyone. Already the NFL rumors are heating up, as the LA Rams are already getting linked to QB Bryce Young. But, does it make any sense for the team to pursue him?
There are valid reasons for the team to have any interest in Bryce Young. For starters, the Rams are struggling in 2024. Realistically speaking, the team does not have the feel of a postseason team right now, and a 36-year-old quarterback deserves to be competing in the NFL Playoffs now, not 'someday.'
But the Rams roster currently boasts veteran QB Jimmy Garoppolo, an intriguing veteran who could be attractive to the Carolina Panthers right now. At least while they regroup around a new franchise quarterback. And the Rams in a trade of Jimmy G to the Panthers, could expect to get Bryce Young in return, with only a minimal Day 3 draft pick needed.
QB Bryce Young is 5-foot-10, 204 pounds, and he is a disaster in the Panthers offense this season. Backup QB Stetson Bennett is 5-foot-11, 190 pounds, and is the lone quarterback behind veteran QB Matthew Stafford beyond 2024.
Neither Young nor Bennett is an obvious future franchise quarterback to the team, yet. But if they compete together for the right to assume the reins of the offense, perhaps one will emerge as an obvious successor. Right now, the team has no such heir apparent.
The LA Rams will eventually need to consider the future of the team. And, having started the 2024 NFL season at 0-2, perhaps those future plans should start now.
As always, thanks for reading.
