With the 77th pick
The LA Rams select Joe Tippmann, offensive center, from Wisconsin. If you wanted the LA Rams offensive line to get more physical, bigger, and meaner, you are absolutely in luck with this selection. Tippmann is a snarling mass of fury and devastation on the offensive line, and he has the dimensions to hold his own against any NFL nose tackle. He stands 6-foot-6 and weighs an incredible 313 pounds. Incredible because his frame is so massive, that he looks skinny.
Tippmann is an offensive center, with the power to snap and then destroy defenders. He keeps his head on a swivel, and his football IQ matches that of the quarterback, particularly when he reads the defense and calls out the blocking assignments.
Tippmann is tall, but he bends naturally, ensuring that he stays under the defenders pads. And LA Rams will love his size, and he is large enough to protect both A-gaps until a guard can pivot and lend him a hand. But the best part of all is how effectively he can get up a head of steam and plow through the defense when run blocking.
You might think that veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford will struggle to see past such a large center. But it goes both ways, and defensve backs will go bonkers trying to read the eyes of Stafford behind the man-mountain Tippmann. And if the LA Rams want to get more production out of the running game, TIppmann projects to be a better offensive center than any player who has played the position for Rams head coach Sean McVay.
The Rams do not grab another cornerback with the extra Day 2 pick. But landing a starting center? Yes please.
