Rams bolster defensive front in 2024 NFL Draft first-round pick odds

The Los Angeles Rams will have a first round pick in the NFL Draft for the first time since 2016 this season, slated to pick No. 19 heading into next Thursday’s draft. 

This will be the first first round pick of the Sean McVay era after building a Super Bowl winning team around moving out draft capital for more proven talent. A year removed from a postseason appearance, the Rams need to address key parts of the roster with some young talent, hoping to nail the first round pick. 

Oddsmakers believe that the Rams will target the trenches as a place to improve its roster, slating offensive lineman as the modest favorite to be the position of the first draft pick, with defensive line (or edge) slightly behind. 

LA is in transition at the moment as the team’s star pass rusher Aaron Donald retired following the 2023 season. While the Rams will look to fill his void through committee, possibly with a blue-chip first rounder, the team needs to also fortify its offensive line. 

While picking No. 19 may lead to some guesswork as to how the draft board breaks in front of General Manager Les Snead, Peter Schrager of NFL.com is confident that the team will target an offensive player in the first round.:

I'll go on record with something of a guarantee here: If the Rams do not trade back, you better believe Sean McVay's first-ever first-round selection will be an offensive player.

Schrager went on to mock Oklahoma offensive tackle Tyler Guyton to be the pick, sticking with the consensus odds a week or so out from the first round.
