There seems to be no end to the LA Rams ability to find exciting offensive weapons on Day 3 of the NFL Draft. The team selected RB Kyren Williams in Round 5 of the 2022 NFL Draft. The team selected WR Puka Nacua in Round 5 of the 2023 NFL Draft. And the team selected the promising rookie wide receiver Jordan Whittington in Round 6 of the 2024 NFL Draft.
So far, the team has been quite pleased and impressed with Whittington. Unlike many teams that draft receivers who put up big numbers in college football, hoping to coach them in the other responsibilities needed to play the position in the NFL. the Rams front office takes a different path to making their selections.
The Rams seek out passionate players who willingly block, who run crisp routes, and whose passion for the game of football allows them to embrace whatever the coach asks of that player. And then, the team coaches them how to catch passes and put up big numbers on the football field.
It's still early, but it appears that the Rams may be onto something:
If you enjoy physical football, you will enjoy Whittington. He is a fun player to watch, not just in the process of catching passes, but what he does with the football after catching passes. He is a strong runner who can shed defensive backs, break tackles, and gain plenty of yards after the catch.
Almost as much fun as watching him is listening to him while he played against the Cowboys while mic'd up:
He even predicted the final score, 13 to 12, long before the Rams scored the only touchdown in the game.
He was confident, and it was infectious.
Perhaps the comment that was the most thought provoking was his surprise at how much support he is getting from his teammates. It's #Ramily for a reason.
The fun part of watching rookies play in the NFL is the unbridled joy they exhibit as they play the game. It's fun to watch a rookie like Jordan Whittington experience the NFL for the first time. Not only from his solid football performance, but for the way he is experiencing the game in such a joyful way. And as fans, we can see the first flickers of a flame that will burn brightly over the course of his NFL career.
The regular season will arrive in due time. For now, this is preseason. Games can be enjoyed simply from the competition. And Jordan Whittington, among all the other things going on, is simply having the time of his life.
Thanks for reading.
