Rams roster: Fast 40+ LA Rams roster roundup QB Dresser Winn (#20)
By Bret Stuter
When the LA Rams allowed their quarterback room to empty behind veteran hurler Matthew Stafford, you could almost guarantee that the LA Rams would draft a backup quarterback. But the Rams did not stop there, as the team continued to add quarterbacks, both a collegiate free agent in Dresser Winn and in veteran quarterback Brett Rypien. Let's talk about the addition of Dresser Winn for a moment.
A quick summary
Former Tennessee-Martin quarterback Dresser Winn is the 'other guy,' in the LA Rams barbershop quartet-back room. He is not the starter. He is not the heir-apparent successor. He isn't even a veteran who is on the roster just in case. He is a 6-foot-2 rookie quarterback who was signed to the LA Rams after the NFL Draft
What I don't like about this signing
When it comes to undrafted rookies, particularly at a high-profile and highly competitive role as NFL quarterback, you need to have some aspect of your game that jumps off the page and screams "Nobody can do it as well as I can." And yet, on the surface, very little jumps off the page at first glance at Dresser Winn.
Even his RAS is a bit . . . meh:
While I am not asserting that average RAS scores have no business in the NFL, it does open the question of what are Winn's chances of making the Rams roster, or why did the team sign him to begin with?
In terms of college production, Dresser Winn had to overcome several injuries early in his college career. While he never threw more interceptions than touchdowns in any given season, his career totals of 37 touchdowns to 24 interceptions is a bit concerning.
What I like about this signing
Digging a little deeper, some clues began to align. Dresser Winn is a multi-sport collegiate athlete who may not be a track star, but has the ironclad mindset to succeed in the NFL. He is a true pocket-passer, but he was sacked only 27 times despite facing enormous pass rush pressure.
While he has areas to refine and improve, he has solid instincts at the position and is a quick thinker who can process the chaos of a pocket breaking down around him and keep his head about him.
What I love about this signing
In term of improvisation, throwing off platform and off sequence, Dresser Winn is a home run. If you think back to all of the elements about former quarterback Jared Goff that frustrated head coach Sean McVay, Dresser Winn embodies those qualities.
He feels the pressure. He can throw on the run, off his back foot, and outside of the pocket. He can hurry his throw, throw from an angle, and even when he is under pressure, he continues to look downfield. He has a cannon for an arm, but can soften the tough to lay the football into the outstretched arms of his receivers.
The challenge is to somehow combine and forge all of those skills into consistent and dependable production on the football field. He will take his chances and throw the football. The LA Rams simply need to improve Winn's ability to throw the ball to the receiver rather than the defender.
What are his chances of making the roster?
I don't believe that he will make the LA Rams' 53-man roster unless he plays lights out in preseason games. I do think his best chance is to sign on to the Rams practice squad and develop for a year. But to do even that, he will need to show significant progress throughout training camp.
