NFL Insiders believe Rams should invest in a veteran QB
At the same time, the same personnel executives, scouts, analysts, and even coaches have to be brutally honest with themselves. The LA Rams are very good at some things. But in other areas, the team has struggled, or at least not proven an ability to master that necessary skill. As one example, can the team truly say with confidence that they can develop a rookie quarterback prospect into an NFL starter? Since hiring Sean McVay as the head coach in 2017, the LA Rams have not had much success at that.
The team has resurrected the careers of several quarterbacks whose reputation was tarnished for one reason or another. And so, is that the path that the Rams take this offseason to shore up the depth at the quarterback position?
In the past two seasons, the team has managed to help veteran quarterback Baker Mayfield reclaim his NFL career. After showing up and helping the Rams win some games in truly Hollywood drama fashion, Mayfield signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to compete for their starting quarterback role. Not only did he win the starting job, but he led the Buccaneers to the 2024 NFL Playoffs.
In 2023, the same 'let's have some fun,' effect could be seen with veteran QB Carson Wentz. Unlike other teams whose hopes for success were pinned to Wentz as some sort of NFL prophet who could lead their team to the promised land, this football team knows the way. And perhaps it is that culture that merely needs the quarterback to do quarterback things that gives seasoned quarterbacks a fertile future to find their own passion for football.
