WHAT?!

The Los Angeles Rams are already severely injured on both sides of the ball, so if this season turns south, they should consider a major trade of QB Matthew Stafford. Am I actually being serious? Yes, yes I am. The LA Rams are already injured to dangerously significant levels, and shades of 2022 are beginning to pop up.

Still, though, the Rams put a tough game on display and took the Detroit Lions into overtime. The season is far from over, but with all of these injuries piling up, you have to wonder if this is going to be one of those years.

I hope not, but that's the way it has shaped up thus far, and the Rams risk starting 0-2 after Week 2, as the Arizona Cardinals are no slouches and will be better than people think in the 2024 NFL Season. So, Matthew Stafford...

Well, he's in his age-36 season and is clearly in the back-nine of his maybe-Hall of Fame career. Stafford has been banged up for most of his career and has dealt most recently with some serious neck injuries. It's not crazy to think that Stafford, who has a wife and kids, has considered retiremen in the near future.

If the LA Rams are just not in the mix when the NFL trade deadline comes around this season, the Rams should consider turning the page and moving on from Stafford in a trade. It is possible financially, and it would give them a bit of a head-start in their QB search. They could end up scoring a high-enough pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to land a top QB prospect.

The Rams accomplished what they set out to do by trading for Matthew Stafford, so any success after that is just sprinkles on top. They got Stafford to try and win the Super Bowl, and they did.

They also made the trade knowing that he's aging into his 30s and is not a long-term solution. So, if the 2024 NFL Season ends up being a lost one for the LA Rams, they should see if there are any teams out there in a position to make a run who could acquire Stafford.

This could end up going down as the most consequential trade deadline move in NFL history, and to a degree, the Rams would be doing right by Stafford if the season is lost. There should be no bad blood under any circumstances when the time comes for the Rams and Stafford to part ways, and a 2024 trade deadline trade would be a possible scenario here.
