The LA Rams are about to experience something that has never happened before, at least not to my frantic 72 hours of researching NFL history. In astronomical terminology, this would be considered a conjuncture, the alignment of celestial bodies. But for the NFL and the LA Rams, it's nothing quite as . . . large.

Still, if you are excited about the LA Rams (10-7) traveling to face the Detroit Lions (12-5) in the Wild Card Round of the 2024 NFL Playoffs, but are not certain what makes this game so very special, you've come to the right place.

Events in life often occur and slip past us, frequently because nobody tagged the event as epic or in the once-in-a-lifetime category. So let's start this discussion by tagging the Rams-Lions playoff game as a once-in-a-lifetime event. For example, did you know that 25, 956 days have elapsed since the LA Rams and Detroit Lions last met in the National Conference Championship game?

That works out to 71 years, which is more than a lifetime for many persons. Even more astonishing, the LA Rams have been in the NFL since 1937 (86 years), while the Detroit Lions have been in the NFL since 1930 (93 years).

It's mind-blowing to realize that these two NFL teams have been in the league as two of the oldest NFL franchises, and yet have not faced one another in postseason competition for 71 years. With such a long wait, you might expect that the Rams and the Lions will put on quite a show.
